Special Programs
swoosh
Brant Lake Camp offers a number of special programs that supplement our regular schedule for those who have an usually high interest and motivation towards certain activities. These programs are often run during our regular schedule so some other activity may be missed, although never a team sport. Some also require additional fees. Our Special Programs include:

Special Programs

Golf
Golf’s popularity continues to rise throughout the country, particularly among kids. At Brant Lake Camp, we have responded by increasing the availability of golf in our program and continuing to upgrade and expand our facilities which now include a 2-hole hilltop practice facility, a multi-station golf cage and a new, professionally installed artificial turf practice putting green, chipping aprons and sand trap. We also provide instruction for all ages that want it. In addition, Inters are now offered golf outings to nearby courses over the summer (Sophs and Juniors may also go, if appropriate) while Seniors can elect to play golf out of camp two times a week. (There is no additional cost for this program.)

Golf Extra (Seniors Only)
For extremely motivated golfers in the Senior Camp, we will offer our special Golf Extra program which supplements our regular, twice weekly Senior golf trips. An additional 6 – 8 opportunities are available for Golf Extra participants including trips to nicer courses and opportunities to play 18 holes.

Special TennisSpecial & Intensive Tennis
We take great pride in providing outstanding instruction in our major sports programs at Brant Lake Camp, with tennis being one of those that is truly special and at the forefront. While all our boys have considerable opportunity for tennis lessons and matches (approx 4-6 times per week), we offer two unique, voluntary and supplemental programs for those campers who wish to develop in the sport even more. We refer to these programs as:

1) Special Tennis
2) Intensive Tennis

(In the Senior Camp these programs are known as Tennis Majors/Minors)

There is no additional fee for Special or Intensive Tennis, but there is a necessary commitment by the camper to attend and give a full effort during these sessions. Special Tennis means that a camper will receive 2-3 EXTRA lessons/matches per week at a time set up by their tennis pro. Intensive Tennis lessons/matches occur an EXTRA 4-6 times per week. These sessions will usually happen during a Hobby Time or during General Swim time. Once again, when scheduled, the camper must give up their otherwise scheduled activity (it will never be during a “team activity”) and take part with a strong effort.

The length of the Special and Intensive Tennis sessions vary as to age but they follow the approximate format:

  • Sophs and Juniors: 2:1 ratio for 30 minutes
  • Inters and Seniors: 2:1 or 1:1 ratio for 45 minutes

We do not recommend that a camper take Intensive Tennis unless there is an absolute strong commitment towards tennis as the primary activity that the camper enjoys. Of course, a boy can drop out or add it in during the summer, but it is best to make a thoughtful choice at the beginning in order for us to manage this program effectively.

Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey
For experienced and highly motivated Ice Hockey players who wish to maintain a feel for the ice and keep their skills up over the summer, Brant Lake Camp offers this special program.

With the growing interest among many of our campers and their parents in ice hockey, we added a program about 7 years ago, designed for those with a serious interest in the sport. It complements what we believe is a strong roller hockey program and consists of 4 – 5 workouts during the summer, each running an hour and fifteen minutes at a facility within a short drive from camp.

Our Ice Hockey program is run by Dave Cramoy, one of our Directors, who has over 20 years coaching experience at every level from mini-Mites through Midgets and High School. He has also coached a number of years at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, most recently in 2010, and holds his Advanced Coaching Certification from USA Hockey.

Our sessions are all non-check and involve boys ages 8-15, although we have accepted some very capable younger players in this group. We start with a number of full-ice warm up drills followed by some varied small-ice competitive drills including  2 v 1, 2 v 2, 3 v 3-- emphasizing quick puck movement, skating and shooting. The bulk of the time however, is devoted to full ice, 5 v 5 fun scrimmages with equal shift times for all. Our program is not chocked full of repetitive skating and conditioning drills but is oriented to having fun and playing the game. Please be aware, however, that this is not a learn-to-skate or beginner activity-- with the skill level generally strong as most of our participants play on some kind of travel hockey team-- and are competent to highly accomplished players.

Full equipment is required, including helmet with a full cage, gloves, shin and elbow guards, neck guard, protective cup, hockey pants and stick. Hockey skates are obviously needed; however, they may also be rented at the facility for a modest charge. (For your information, much of the same equipment may be utilized for roller hockey.)

If you have any questions or would like more information about our Ice Hockey program, please don’t hesitate to contact Dave Cramoy.

Lacrosse
Lacrosse is a fast growing sport at Brant Lake and we have many boys who play and want more opportunity to participate. Our "Field Turf" facility is a great practice/scrimmage area and we hire more and more counselors each year who play lacrosse and are capable of teaching/coaching.

For much of the summer lacrosse is part of our Hobby Program. However, to augment our efforts in support of the sport, we conduct one or two special "Lacrosse Weeks" when we bring in a very high quality instructor to run the program, providing additional opportunities for skill development and play for this increasingly popular activity. During these weeks, lacrosse generates the status usually afforded only to baseball, basketball, tennis and soccer.

Tutoring
If you wish your son to have tutoring, we will attempt to find a qualified person on the staff that is willing to work with him during their mutual free time. We recommend one session a week but can usually accommodate a second session. More may be difficult to schedule. There is a nominal session fee for tutoring which is paid directly to the tutor. Each session will be approximately 30 minutes long. If work with a professional teacher is necessary, the cost may be higher . (Bar Mitzvah tutoring is also available.)
